Timber frame construction has rapidly grown in popularity across the UK, with many major house builders now embracing this method for its sustainability, speed of build and quality control.

At Pinewood Structures, we’ve worked in the timber frame industry for over 40 years; we’ve partnered with developers to deliver consistent and reliable solutions to our customers. Here, we’re going to take a closer look at some of the UK’s leading house builders and how they’re adopting timber frame technology across their developments.

//List of Timber Frame House Builders in the UK

  1. Barratt Homes
  2. Vistry Group
  3. Taylor Wimpey
  4. Persimmon Homes
  5. Bellway Homes
  6. Cala Homes

Barratt Homes

Barratt Homes is one of the clearest advocates for timber frame construction among the major UK developers. Their aim is for 30% of new homes to be built using timber frames by 2025.

Barratt highlights that timber frame enables quicker, more consistent builds and helps to reduce site waste. They also place emphasis that timber frame homes can offer improved energy efficiency, supporting their broader sustainability commitments.

Vistry Group

Vistry Group is also heavily investing in offsite manufacturing capabilities, including timber frame systems. Their in-house business, Vistry Works, plays a key part in rolling out timber frame construction across the UK.

With a focus on quality control and sustainability, Vistry sees timber frame as integral to their strategy to meet government housing targets while reducing their carbon emissions.

Taylor Wimpey

Taylor Wimpey has begun incorporating timber frame homes across many developments in the UK. While they still also use masonry construction, they acknowledge that timber frame offers sustainability benefits and faster construction timelines.

They have a growing focus on modern methods of construction, and Taylor Wimpey is gradually increasing its use of timber frames, particularly as the company moves towards greener building strategies. This includes aiming to increase their timber frame usage to 30% of completions by 2030 and producing around 3,000 timber frame kits per year at full capacity.

Persimmon Homes

One of the UK’s biggest house building companies, Persimmon Homes, has been using timber frame since 2006. The Persimmon Group have their very own timber frame manufacturing business called “Space4” which supports all of their brands including Persimmon Homes.

In 2023, plans were approved for a new Space4 factory which is believed to be the biggest timber frame factory in the UK. Persimmon use these materials in their own MMC systems and their new Eco Range, however not all homes are built using timber frame technology.

Bellway Homes

Bellway Homes is significantly investing in timber frame technology. The company recently announced plans to double its timber frame output source, with homes being built via their in-house manufacturing facilities.

Bellway has clear intent to embed timber frame across most of its developments in the coming years, recognising that its role in achieving net zero goals and improving build efficiency is of clear significance.

Cala Homes

Cala Homes has long been a supporter of timber frame construction, particularly in Scotland, where it is more widely used. In 2023, Cala acquired Taylor Lane timber frame, giving them a more direct control over their timber frame supply chain.

Cala’s use of timber frame aligns with their sustainability ambitions which offer energy efficient, low carbon homes that support the UK’s wider transition to more environmentally responsible construction.

//The Future of Timber Frame in the UK

A 2024 feature by the Structural Timber Association refers to the UK reaching a timber tipping point as the construction sector increasingly shifts towards MMC and greener methods.

With growing government pressures to build more homes and in a sustainable way, timber frame is no longer a future option, but a present solution. Timber frame can play a crucial role in lowering emissions and meeting housing targets.

At Pinewood Structures, we’ve worked alongside developers for over 4 decades to deliver reliable, high quality timber frame systems that meet the needs of modern house building. Our commitment to precision and sustainability sets us apart – we’re trusted to deliver.
