Youngsters from Turnford and Wormley are set to benefit from the best start to life following the opening of a brand new children’s centre.

Pinewood Structures supplied the Timber frame system to Morgan Sindall who constructed the £1.5 million Sure Start Children’s Centre along with a new police base for officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Wormley and Turnford Safer Neighborhood Team.

The new children’s centre will operate a range of services for children up to the age of five and their families as well as Squirrels Day Nursery, a community room and crèche facilities. Services include family support and education, training and employment advice, health clinics, a toy library and a small meeting room.

The new single-storey building comprises polished blockwork and natural ventilation to reduce its carbon footprint. It further boasts kitchen facilities, quiet areas, a large outdoor play area and indoor soft play room.

The police base, which will enable officers to work at the heart of their beat and respond to incidents and residents’ concerns more effectively, is not open to members of the public but will be used for police surgery meetings and in due course as a place where residents will be able to get crime prevention advice.

Timber frame was chosen over alternative offsite construction methods due to its lightweight construction and design flexibility.  The challenge for the design team was how to create the staggers in the building design whilst keeping the centre line of the roof, Pinewood Structures’ experienced team worked through a solution that was able to meet the specification and large spans required.

Speed of construction was also very important to fit in with tight timescales required as the existing Nursery needed to remain open whilst the new replacement was being built next door.
