Weybridge Hospital, SurreyPinewood was asked by Fitzpatrick to produce the timber frame for this design and build hospital project in Weybridge, Surrey. Timber frame construction was chosen as the preferred method for this project allowing accurate off-site manufacturing and offering fast and flexible construction. Pinewood designed, manufactured and erected the complete timber frame working structure with all external walls, internal partitions, floors and the roof structure. Floor construction was ‘I’ Joist due to the critical specification called for by the client. The floor loading was based on 5+1kn with a maximum deflection of 5mm in rooms and 3mm in corridors. Access to the site proved challenging as it was surrounded by existing hospital and residential buildings, and a school playing field. Construction of the hexagonal hospital was therefore dependent on a fixed tower crane sited in the central courtyard for the duration of the project. Many other challenges were confronted during the nine-week project including the handling of 12m attic trusses used to form the roof to accommodate air handling equipment. It was necessary to close roads in the surrounding area to allow delivery of the trusses which were transported on specially adapted trailers. Movement permits from the police were required and precisely timed deliveries allowed for safe arrival at the site. Expert site programming and production planning enabled the project to progress smoothly. The 2,800sq m facility now accommodates GP surgeries, social services, wards, a pharmacy and dentist.
